What is a Heavy Duty Truck?

Heavy duty trucks are absolutely essential in our economy today. They’re responsible for moving goods across the country and transporting large equipment for various industries. Our team at GATR Truck Center understands the importance of having the right truck! We’ve put together a quick guide for defining exactly what a heavy duty truck is so you can determine if that’s the right fit for you.

Weight Classifications

Most trucks are classified and defined by their weight. Heavy duty trucks are considered any vehicle that weighs more than 26,001 pounds. Common vehicles that fall into this weight range include: cement mixers, garbage trucks, larger semis, city buses, and mobile cranes. When you see an oversized load heading down the highway, it’s more than likely being pulled by a heavy duty truck!

Within the heavy duty classification, you will find three different vehicle classes; Class 7, 8, and 9. Class 7 vehicles are between 26,001 and 33,000 pounds. Class 9, on the other hand, is anything above 60,000 pounds!

Licensing & Regulation

All heavy duty vehicles require the operator to have a CDL, or commercial driver’s license. So, no matter what kind of heavy duty truck you need, you’ll also need to have the correct licensing to legally operate.

There are also guidelines that must be followed when you carry a CDL and when you haul with heavy duty vehicles. You will need to be completely aware of differing weight limits, vehicle requirements, and driving guidelines before you hit the road.

Heavy duty trucks are incredible and can tackle incredible tasks! Visit us at one of our Minnesota or Iowa locations. You can find us in Elk River or Sauk Rapids, MN, or in Cedar Rapids, Des Moines or Waterloo, IA.
